Shawntel Nieto has joined Singapore-based sustainability advisory firm CSRWorks International, as its country manager for the Philippines.

Under this new role, Nieto will be leading the firm’s strategic direction, public and client relations, and operations in the country. This is CSRWorks International’s first hire for the Philippines, with the aim to expand their services in the country and the Asia Pacific region, said Nieto.

She will be leading the upcoming Asia Sustainability Reporting Summit 2021 and Asia’s Top Sustainability Superwomen Awards both happening in December 2021.

In her personal capacity, she and her family founded the non-profit organisation One Cainta Food Programme, which provides food and water for up to 1000 people. Since the start of the pandemic, it has provided about 1.1 million food hampers to over 400,000 people across 10 cities and 7 hospitals in the Philippines.

Alongside other sustainability practitioners, she also started the Society of Sustainability Practitioners (SSP), which serves as the first association of sustainability professionals in the country. In addition, she hosts the podcast SustainaRumble!.

For her various sustainability efforts and her work to support communities and frontliners during the pandemic, Nieto was the first Filipino to receive the Diana Award, which recognises youths aged 9-25 for their social action or humanitarian work.

“Sustainability is a growing field in the Philippines, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. We now understand the definitions and have the sustainability knowledge, but applying it and learning how to evaluate what we’re doing in order to improve our initiatives is something that we’re still lacking as practitioners and as a country,” said Nieto.

“I believe in CRSWorks International’s ability to fill the gaps by capacitating the teams, organisations and systems. We either win this together or will lose everything apart. I think this goes for the pandemic, but it also rings true for sustainable development. No one company or organisation can do it alone,” she added.
