Waste Management ME Forum to be in Dubai - UAE will gather waste management professionals to discuss practices to manage waste and utilizing it as a resource.
A rapid increase in population has been one of the leading factors for the rise of domestic waste in Middle East. With more than half of the population living in urban areas, the economic expansion in Middle East has led gross urban waste generation to reach over 150 million tonnes per annum. Solid waste generation in the UAE is 1.76 to 2.3 kg/day per person. An increase in municipal solid waste in the Middle East has lead to biomass becoming one of the primary sources of energy.
4th Annual Waste Management ME Forum to be held in Dubai - UAE on 11 – 12 November 2013 will look at the latest developments in waste management including waste to energy. This forum being supported by the Dubai Municipality will assemble industry experts to collectively devise strategies and innovative technology to actively manage waste issues in the region. One of the key sessions at the forum would be energy recovery from municipal solid waste.
The Municipality of Dubai has begun focusing on adopting integrated and sustainable waste management practices with a vision to generate 20MW of power from landfill gas by 2020. Their efforts have been noticed recently with Al Qusais, largest waste collection site which has begun producing electricity. This has become the first landfill in Middle East to run its entire operation with electricity generated from landfill gas through the flaring of methane.
In line to this ambitious achievement, Eng. Abdul Majeed Saifee, Director of Waste Management Department at the municipality in his address said, “Dubai Municipality’s Waste Management Department has an integrated approach to waste management in the Emirate and has rolled out several sustainable practices aimed at conserving the environment and promoting the social well-being and health of residents.”
Eng. Abdul Majeed Saifee will be participating at the forum as one of the key panelists and will apprise delegates on effective waste & resource management, discussing strategies for sustainable business practices and achieving the goal of zero waste in the near future.
The forum will also feature eminent speakers representing organizations such as the Ministry of Environment - Oman, United Nations Environment Programme, University of Dammam, Keppel Integrated Engineering, GE Power Conversion and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority. Some other topics to be covered include potential health hazards due to improper waste management, hazardous waste – challenges & proposed solutions and e-waste; identifying the magnitude of the problem & feasible solutions. An interactive panel discussion will also cover how to create a balance between environmental protection & economic growth and safety in handling biological waste in micro labs. The forum will create an avenue to exchange view points concerning the future and simultaneously aim to benefit from the experience of other countries.
