Thorium nuclear fuel not a silver bullet

Proponents of thorium as a nuclear fuel have said the element provides all the benefits of nuclear energy without the costs and safety concerns of uranium-based technology, but a new study says those claims may be overstated. Authors of the study from the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory said the UK should continue low-key research into thorium-based technology, but that the impetus and funding for intensive research was lacking.

Globally, substantial research on thorium is underway in the US, China and India.
