Waste Management Conference in Oman supported by Muscat Municipality

Oman’s initiative towards waste management makes headway with the 2nd International Conference for Waste Management Muscat 2013.

Organised by the Muscat Municipality in cooperation with Fleming Gulf, the two day conference is taking place at the Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel on the 25 - 26 March. Inaugurating the conference and exhibition will be His Excellency Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Shihi, Minister of Ministry of Regional Municipalities & Water Resources. The conference is schedule to see sessions addressed by the the municipality on the issues of waste within the region and the plans in place to tackle the issues. The ministry driven event will also have an exclusive exhibition that will run along side the conference in cooperation with Al Nimr Expo.

Ahmed Noori Al-Raisi, Deputy Director for Environmental Health, Directorate of Health Affairs Muscat Municipality, will also present a key session on the Muscat Municipalities perspective and practices with waste management in the region. Talking about waste recycling in Muscat, he will discuss Muscat’s dumpsite rehabilitation and talk on the operation of the first sanitary landfill in Muscat (Al-Multaga). The conference chair will be Dr. Mehdi Jaffer, Vice President of the Environment Society of Oman.

The conference will also see representatives from be’ah Oman, a government initiation for waste management, Royal Hospital and Sultan Qaboos University locally. GCC experts will comprise of Health Authority Abu Dhabi, Saudi Environmental Society, Arab Network for Environment and Development, UNESCO Doha and Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency to name a few.

In a press conference held on 12 March at the Muscat Municipality, it was stated that key themes for this years conference will delve into the issues of solid waste and solutions to reduce the negative impact to the environment. Policies impacting regulations and how SME investments can boost the waste management initiative will also be discussed.

The two day ministry driven event will see in attendance over 100 ministry officials alongside other regional and international decision maker from across different industry vectors. Leading up to the event, His Excellency Sultan Hamdoon Al Harthi, Head of Muscat Municipality said “Oman is undergoing radical changes in waste management and this conference is only the start point of that.”

Sponsored by some of the leading GCC waste management companies like Gulf City Cleaning Company (Bahrain), Bee’ah(Sharjah) and Al Ahlia(Oman), the conference also see support from leading international organisations ISEO, ICEC and CIWEM.
