On 19th May, 2020, Eco-Business Philippines and Mondelez Philippines will be hosting a high-level panel discussion on plastic packaging and waste management in the Philippines and the region.
The event will provide a macro-overview of the plastics issue and its impact on society and the environment and identify key obstacles and challenges to reducing plastic usage and increasing recycling of plastic. It will outline the role of individual stakeholder groups in addressing the issue and explore how to integrate zero waste goals and circular economy principles in action plans.
At a time when single-use plastic use is surging as packaged goods deliveries to locked-down households rise, it has never before been more crucial for government, business, and the entire community to spotlight urgent and important issues behind plastic pollution and its impact on society and the environment and identify pragmatic solutions to reducing plastic usage and increasing recycling of plastic.
Plastic packaging is not only an environmental issue, it is an economic and a food safety issue as well. While plastic waste recycling infrastructures appear to be lacking in most communities and cities, plastic remains an efficient and valuable material for food packaging especially in countries like the Philippines where there is a lack of alternative and proper food storage options, and where the archipelagic make-up makes food distribution a complex process.
As policymakers and business leaders agree that plastic waste management is a problem, could an agreement also be reached as to how to solve this problem? Will a ban or taxation on plastic packaging be effective? What impacts would this have on Filipino consumers?
The high-level panel discussion will examine the entire plastics value chain in the Philippines and the regional context to identify where key problems are and how to address them, particularly highlighting the sweeping plastic bans occurring in the country and in the region—and their effectiveness.
