Green city to host 6th World Environmental Education Congress

Fittingly, Brisbane, a green business events city with a clear commitment environmental sustainability, will host the 6th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC), themed Explore, Experience, Educate, in July 2011.

Previously hosted in Portugal, Brazil, Italy, South Africa and Canada, this is the first time that the WEEC will be held in the Asia-Pacific region.

More than 600 delegates from organisations with a stake in environmental and sustainability education are expected to take part in the international Congress, to hear from global experts about the latest in environmental research, industry and policy developments, and educational programs.

Keynote speakers include international climate change expert, Professor Jean Palutikof, Director of the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility at Queensland’s Griffith University, and Emeretta Cross from MerethanVision, Victoria.

The five-day Congress program will encourage participants to learn and share new ways of thinking and to explore new trends in research and practice in environmental education.

The first two days of the program will focus on the science impact on climate change in the Asia-Pacific, while day three provides an opportunity for young people to discuss the nature and purpose of environmental education in the future.

In addition to the official program, participants will also have the opportunity to participate in parallel activities that will be run in conjunction with the Congress including showcasing the Queensland Department of Education and Training’s Outdoor and Environmental Education Centres’ pedagogy and place, as well as field trips which will take place on Saturday 23 July and give delegates the opportunity to experience the fantastic environmental education practices that are in place throughout South-East Queensland.

Participants will have the chance to network and engage with environmental educators who work in schools, higher education, federal, state and local government agencies, non-government organisations, industry, business and education.

The 2011 Congress will be held between 19–23 July at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Queensland, Australia. Sponsors include the Queensland Government, Griffith University, Auzion, Redland City Council and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
