The Asian Century is here.
Our cities are booming, populations are growing, and rapid economic development is transforming the region. It’s the dawn of a new era, and a chance to get sustainable development right.
As our cities fill up with people in search of brighter futures and better livelihoods, we need solutions that help deliver that. Cities which are green, clean, resilient and cool—for all to live, work and play. In short, cities that are liveable.
The Liveability Challenge aims to close the financing gap between the ideas that will make our cities better and the capital that will make these solutions a reality. This year, we called on all thinkers, dreamers, innovators and problem solvers from all over the world to submit their innovative solutions in waste management and sustainable cooling which are applicable to Singapore and other Asian cities in the region.
Following a successful two-month global call for innovative, ground-breaking solutions in waste management and cooling, we have sifted out the six best projects from the hundreds received. Finalists will gather on the sidelines of the World Cities Summit to pitch their projects to a panel of Singapore’s most well-known and deep-pocketed investors for the opportunity to secure with up to S$1 million in funding.
You’ll also hear from one of Asia’s most widely followed venture capitalists as they share their thoughts on the cleantech investment scene in an in-depth fireside chat discussing how we can move the needle on investments into sustainability solutions. How can society support the growth of these solutions and what needs to be done to make them attractive investments for private equity and venture capitalists?

Fireside chat: Funding the Future
Moderated by Daniel Lin, Managing Director, FundedHere
Rapid economic and urban development across Asia has given rise to cities that are financially wealthy but congested with little room for the environment. In order to achieve sustainable development, we need game-changing cleantech solutions — floating solar panels, vertical urban gardens or even edible plastics.
According to the Asian Development Bank, there is a $1.3 trillion market for cleantech globally. Yet less than 2 per cent of start-ups in Asia are focused on cleantech, and under 10 per cent of global cleantech venture capital investment goes to entrepreneurs and start-ups in Asia.
How can we support the growth of these solutions and what needs to be done to make them attractive investments for private equity and venture capitalists? In this dialogue, we’ll hear from one of the region’s top investors about what it means to invest in sustainability, and how we can move the needle to get more venture capitalists interested in funding the future.
