Makan Day 2013

We might be a country that appreciates our local fare, but the problem of food waste does not get as much attention as it deserves here. In fact, Singaporeans are wasting a lot more food than they should.

This forum and feast event, the first of its kind in Singapore, is held in support of reducing food waste. In the forum segment, we are hosting a discussion panel with speakers representing the different levels of influences of food wastage (People, F&B Businesses, Government, Non-profit organisations). This is a moderated discussion on how concerted efforts can help reduce food wastage.

As of now, we have 4 confirmed panelists:

  • Mr Luke Lee, Director of Singapore Food & Beverage Alliance
  • Ms Sally Trethewie, Associate Research Fellow of Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS)
  • Ms Phoebe Tan, Miss Earth Singapore 2012
  • Ms Ngeow Yin Teen, Singapore Environment Council.

As the event revolves around the idea for food wastage reduction, we will be featuring special food items and drinks that make use of common food surplus in the kitchen.

In the feast segment, which is another highlight of the event, is a live cooking demonstration by chef & owner of Preparazzi, Mr Jeremy Nguee, who has created a ‘special’ dish for this cause. He will be using leftover ingredients from the 6 canapes that he has prepared for this event to educate the guests on how they can make most of what they have in the kitchen. A special concoction by Chamaeleon Mobile Bar will also showcase how the skins of fruits can be used to make cocktail/mocktail too.
