Qikiqtaaluk Corporation joins World Ocean Council

Qikiqtaaluk Corporation (QC), an Inuit development corporation created by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (formerly Baffin Region Inuit Association), is the latest WOC member from the far north. QC adds to the increasing geographic and cultural scope of the WOC efforts to develop cross-sectoral, circumpolar collaboration on responsible development in the Arctic.

QC integrates Inuit knowledge, beliefs and culture as it invests and develops economic opportunities in key areas. These include: a range of fisheries, marine services, petroleum distribution, environmental remediation, hazardous waste management, marine transportation, as well as the emerging mining and resource development sector.

Harry Flaherty President and CEO stated, “The Qikiqtaaluk Corporation is pleased to become a member of the World Ocean Council, which provides for important international business leadership on sustainable development in the far north. With the increased level of economic activity in the Arctic, it is crucial that we collaborate with other industries in ensuring that the growing economic opportunities in the region, which are critical to the future of our communities, are safe and responsible.”

QC strives to be a major contributor to all sectors of the Nunavut economy. By balancing tradition with innovation and a healthy respect for the environment, QC works to improve the social and economic well-being of Nunavut by investing in or creating sound financial business opportunities.

“We are honored to have Qikiqtaaluk Corporation join the World Ocean Council in order to better tackle the environment and sustainability issues associated with increased coastal and ocean development in the Arctic. The WOC provides a unique international, multi-sectoral forum to catalyze collaboration and leadership on addressing these challenges,” noted WOC Chief Executive Officer, Paul Holthus.
