The invisible waste-pickers of Southeast Asia
This series documents the lives of people working in Southeast Asia's informal waste sector.
Around 3,000 waste pickers work Bantar Gebang landfill, east of Jakarta. They earn a few dollars a day salvaging recyclables and face a range of dangers, from landslides to lightning. The role they play in society is undervalued, say experts.
[Special report] With the government eyeing to build 300 new landfills by the year's end, over-dependence can create negative impact for communities living in the vicinity, including children who salvage what they can from trash piles.
