New guide helps firms ‘sSwot’ up on sustainability

The World Resources Institute (WRI) has launched a tool to help green business leaders pitch projects to the board as they seek to scale up their company’s sustainability efforts.

The free handbook, released this month, is based on the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis often used by senior executives to assess projects or investments, and is geared specifically to tackle the issue of environmental sustainability.

Eliot Metzger, WRI’s project lead, said an increasing number of companies are adopting sustainability strategies. However, the issue often remains a niche area and fails to gain enough attention at board level.

“Many corporations already do a decent job in tackling certain sustainability issues,” he said. “Now it’s time to put more ambitious and comprehensive ideas into action.”
