NDRC official not pleased with low-speed electric vehicles

When compared with the over 300,000 yuan ($46,769) Nissan Leaf, the appearance of low-speed, cheaply priced electric vehicles has taken the industry by storm, with some analysts believing that new EV technology should come from the ground up. However, Li Gang, head of the National Development and Reform Commission’s Department of Industry disagrees, calling the vehicles “rubbish technology”, auto.163.com reported today.

According to Mr. Gang, low-speed electric vehicles suffer from two major flaws, low supply voltage and outdated materials. With the low price comes poor manufacturing quality. Other figures in the industry have voiced their displeasure with the vehicles.

On the other hand, Guo Konghuang, scholar at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, believes that the vehicles are beneficial for the industry, and hopes that the government will aid their development. Despite the fact that the government offers subsidies for EV purchases, it is far from enough to help their popularization.
