Indonesia’s sanitation shortfall

Indonesia looks likely to miss its Millenium Development Goals for sanitation, and regional governments are failing to prioritize the issue, said the head of settlement and housing for the Republic’s development planning agency (Bappenas).

Indonesia has a target of providing sanitation by 2015 to 62 per cent of its population under the Millenium Development Goals, which were agreed to in 2000 by world leaders to reduce global poverty levels. Currently, 55 per cent of Indonesians have access to sanitation, and wastewater treatment masterplans are underway for eight cities.

An expert on sanitation for global aid organzation Unicef said that cities often sidelined planning for sanitation to concentrate on water supply, but noted that the two systems should be addressed in tandem.
