Eco group calls on Apple to follow Samsung’s lead

One of the world’s top three environmental protection groups has launched a campaign urging Apple to emulate rival Samsung in adopting more eco-friendly production standards. 

Friends of the Earth on Sunday said supporters have already sent more than 20,000 e-mails to Apple.

Friends of the Earth objects to the use of tin in handsets and other smart devices. Phone manufacturers have been racing to develop mines on Indonesia’s Bangka Island east of Sumatra, which is among the world’s principal tin-producing regions. This has led to strong protests due to fears that mining will destroy pristine jungles and coral reefs on the island.
