Can ash be recycled into eco-minerals? TNB studying this

Tenaga National Bhd (TNB) is undertaking a feasibility study on finding a commercial and sustainable solution for recycling ash into industrial eco-minerals for its new coal-fired plant in Manjung, Perak.

President and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said TNB had roped in RockTron (Asia) Sdn Bhd, an eco-technology company that pioneered the recycling of fresh and stockpiled fly ash, to jointly conduct the feasibility study.

“We are doing the feasibility study with them for possible utilisation of the ash from TNB’s proposed 1,000-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Manjung,” Che Khalib said yesterday after the signing of the memorandum of understanding with RockTron.

Che Khalib said this effort was also in line with TNB’s support to promote the development of green technology and the Government’s commitment to reducing the country’s carbon footprint emission.

TNB had recently been commissioned by the Government to develop the first unit of 1,000MW coal-fired power plant on its existing power plant site in Manjung.

The new plant is scheduled to be completed in 2015.

Che Khalib said TNB planned to sell all the generated ash produced by the new plant to RockTron.

“RockTron will then re-cycle the fly ash into valuable eco-minerals,” he added.

Under the current arrangement, Che Khalib said the ash from the plant is sold to cement producers.

Meanwhile, RockTron managing director Yazleen Yazid said the company planned to build a new plant near the Manjung power plant if the study found recycling ash to be feasible.

“We expect to invest about RM100mil to RM200mil to set up the facilities,” she said.

The technology used by RockTron also has the potential to reduce global man-made carbon dioxide emissions by up to 2% with its 100% recycled eco-minerals.

RockTron (Asia) is a subsidiary of Britain-based RockTron, a world leader in innovative recycling technology, transforming coal-fired power station waste into valuable, environmentally-coherent industrial minerals.
