UrbanTec China Conference 2013 presents latest topics on smart city development

Five sustainable urban development themes spanning information technology, intelligent transportation, smart buildings and energy efficiency, climate change and smart grids and clean energy, featuring tens of topics will be tabled and discussed over two days by leading global industry thought leaders, government representatives and trade veterans at the second UrbanTec China Conference – the only such event in China – from May 29-30 in Beijing.

This year’s main conference focus points are:

Panel: City Dialogue - Models for Future Urban Development

Forum I: Information Technology for Urban Development

Forum II: Smart Grid and Clean Energy

Forum III: Intelligent Transportation and Mobility

Forum IV: Smart Buildings and Energy Efficiency

Forum V: Climate Change in Cities

Show organizers highlighted that conference topics were carefully selected to ensure relevance in tackling the three major challenges that have been identified as hindering the current development of smart cities in China.

Currently, a less-than-well defined smart city concept means the extent to which it entails is unknown, resulting in the disregard of new information technology applications such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, triple play and wireless broadband, in some cases.

The next issue stems from fragmented efforts and non-integrated information systems among respective horizontal and vertical government departments while the last key problem stems from the lack of information network security which is often neglected in smart city building programs in China.

Optimism is high among organizers and committed participants such as Siemens, Bayer and NEC that the UrbanTec China Conference will aid in the exchange and cooperation of trade professionals as well as between local and foreign governments.

Besides a strong speaker lineup, business networking sessions and call for projects, the event will also spot a showcase of cutting edge products, services and concepts on the sidelines from 28 May – 1 June.

According to the World Health Organization, only two out of ten people resided in the urban area a century ago. By 1990, less than 40 percent of the world’s population lived in a city but this figure rose to account for over half of all people as of 2010. It is forecast that by 2030, six out of every ten people will be city dwellers and this is expected to climb to seven out of ten people by 2050.

It is undeniable that the current worldwide urbanization is greatly exacerbated by climate change, resource shortages, and traffic congestion. This has led to an emergence in the smart city service industry which provides solutions and enhancements for city governments and city residents. China has so far announced 90 pilot projects to explore smart city development.
