GECA welcomes Kate Harris as new CEO

Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) is delighted to welcome Kate Harris as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Ms Harris has an extensive background in leadership, capacity building and education aimed at finding sustainable solutions for the future.

Ms Harris joins GECA after six years at the Centre for Sustainability Leadership, including the last two years as CEO, and is also the founder of consulting firm Future Ready. In both roles she has led organisations that coach individuals, businesses and communities towards improved sustainability leadership.

“We’re delighted to welcome Kate Harris as GECA’s new CEO,” said Gordon Renouf, chair of GECA.

“With her vision, passion for sustainability and leadership qualities Kate is the perfect choice to implement GECA’s bold new mission to increase business and consumer demand for and supply of sustainable products and services nationally,” said Mr Renouf.

GECA’s new strategic direction has been developed over the past eight months under the direction of acting General Manager, Ben Waters, and Director of Innovation, Anna Scott.

“It is a critical time to be driving environmental choice across Australia as sustainability becomes an expected part of business delivery,” said Ms Harris. “I look forward to working collaboratively with you, your business, distributors and consumers to step up in leadership and create positive opportunities for all.”

GECA’s goal is to grow as a leader in sustainable production and consumption by fostering new partnerships while maintaining its role as the only not-for-profit, multi-sector ecolabelling program in Australia. The organisation aims to help companies in all sectors of the economy with their sustainability journey, to drive meaningful change and celebrate those engaging in best practice.

Ms Harris will take up the role in October 2015.

GECA currently has over 2,000 products and services certified under a range of standards, including furniture, paints, flooring materials, cleaning products and more. The organisation recently sponsored Sydney Indesign 2015, which included the ‘GECA eco trail’ to showcase outstanding sustainable designer furniture.

Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) runs Australia’s only independent, not-for-profit, multi-sector ecolabelling program and is the only Australian member of the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN). It develops standards against which products can be independently audited by GECA’s JAS-ANZ accredited conformity assessment bodies (CABs). Its standards are developed following ISO 14024 principles for global best practice in ecolabelling. For more information go to geca.org.au.
