Blue Planet Environmental Solutions, a Singapore headquartered company with plans to grow in Asia, has unveiled the strategic acquisition of Rudra Environmental Solutions which owns and operates a thin film plastic waste recovery facility.

The combined entity now provides a comprehensive solution to convert waste plastic into valuable energy and material outputs while focusing on delivering a positive social and environmental impact.

Founded in 2017 with a vision to create the most sustainable waste management enterprise in Asia, Blue Planet Environmental Solutions is one of the few players in India with a full spectrum of services for waste management including collection, segregation and treatment of waste while creating social upliftment and environmental benefit.
Blue Planet adopts the ‘Triple Bottom Line’ (TBL) ethos of ‘People, Planet, Profit’ throughout its operations and is committed to transparently reporting its impacts and achievements according to environment, social and governance (ESG) standards.

Blue Planet’s integration of sustainability metrics in its core strategy enables it to enhance existing processes in the waste management industry and add significant commercial value.

Its operations and reporting process are aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, a set of development targets by 2030 adopted by member nations, and the 10 principles of the United National Global Compact.

“Blue Planet’s strategy of creating an end-to-end waste management platform is the only sustainable way of solving the ever-growing waste crisis,” said Prashant Singh, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Blue Planet Environmental Solutions.

The waste problem

Asia generates the largest amount of waste by continent, owing to rising populations and the rapid rate of urbanisation. According to the World Bank, it is predicted to generate 1.8 billion tonnes of waste by 2025, but the region faces serious gaps in collection, segregation and processing services.

The third largest country in the continent, India is grappling with severe waste management challenges, as a significant portion of the country’s municipal waste is still being dumped in insanitary uncontrolled tipping sites causing a myriad of social and environmental issues.

The Indian government has in recent years unveiled increasingly ambitious policies to tackle this issue, presenting a huge business opportunity within the waste industry.

Rudra’s transformation through innovation

Rudra has developed a unique technology which is not only able to create a sustainable solution to tackle India’s growing plastic pollution problem, but is also able to create valuable energy and material outputs.

“Rudra has been at the forefront of the waste plastic to oil conversion process and is a pioneer in finding solutions for end of life waste plastic, especially thin plastic, which traditionally has no or low monetary value,” said Dr Medha Tadpatrikar, Founder and Executive Director of Rudra Environmental Solutions.

“Reduction of plastic waste and financial viability for our environmentally sustainable technology is the main mission of the company,” she added.

Rudra is a key piece to achieving Blue Planet’s zero waste to landfill vision, by enabling the company to divert plastic waste from landfills and producing valuable outputs at no cost to the environment.

Besides environmental benefits, Rudra fosters social inclusivity through its operations, which is a key priority for Blue Planet.

Dr Medha added: “Rudra has also been involved in social transformation with its NGO partner, Keshav Sita Trust, where we create awareness among the community of segregation at source, and work to uplift lives of marginalized rural women by creating employment opportunities and empowering them.”

By partnering with a Keshav Sita, Rudra is able to reach 15,000 stakeholders including households, hotels and businesses to collect segregated waste.

In the past three years, the charitable organization has collected more than 350,000 kg of waste plastic, which is equal to a total reduction of 2,100 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere.

Making waste sustainable

“Our collaboration with Rudra is the first step towards achieving the goal of creating practical and scalable solutions to revolutionise the waste management industry,” remarked Madhujeet Chimni, Founder and Chairman of Blue Planet Environmental Solutions.

Shirish Phadtare, Founder and Executive Director of Rudra Environmental Solutions commented: “Blue Planet’s collaboration is an opportunity for further innovation and for gaining an advantage in the global market. We feel that with Blue Planet’s help and expertise, Rudra will be able to achieve greater financial success along with social impact.”

“We are very excited to have Rudra on-board as it helps us successfully address the ever-growing low-grade plastic waste problem and at the same time leverage the social entrepreneurship model,” added Bharadwaj Chivukula, Founder of Blue Planet Environmental Solutions.
