S$2.5m awarded to local companies to develop water treatment technology

Seven local enterprises have been awarded S$2.5 million to develop innovative used water treatment technologies.

The companies, which include small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups, were chosen in a competitive grant call by SPRING Singapore and Singapore’s national water agency PUB.

A statement from SPRING Singapore says the companies will develop applications for both industrial and domestic used-water treatment.

The technologies that they will use include a treatment solution for oily used water from food waste, a membrane system for used water produced by the food & beverage industry, and a high durability and cost-effective ceramic membrane for water purification.

Singapore currently produces the equivalent of some 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools per day of used water. The amount is expected to grow in tandem with the demand for water and to double by 2060.

To keep pace with Singapore’s rapidly growing used water sector, plans are underway to open a new water reclamation plant in Tuas.

The development will open up more room for companies to provide technology in raising the efficiency of used water treatment processes and reducing industrial water consumption through recycling used water.

The PUB-SPRING joint grant call was launched in December 2012 with two objectives.

First, it is to support local SMEs and start-ups in developing and commercialising innovative technologies for Singapore’s used water treatment systems.

Second, it is to provide the chance to test-bed technologies that can support Singapore’s future used water needs.

The seven local enterprises that have been awarded grants are:

- Envirotech and Consultancy
- Wisewater Pte Ltd
- Joyce River Hi-Tech Technologies Pte Ltd
- Ceraflo Pte Ltd
- Ecowise Technologists & Engineers Pte Ltd
- Mattenplant Pte Ltd
- Tritech Engineering and Testing Pte Ltd
