Nine developments were recognised on Monday for outstanding greenery, under a new certification scheme by the National Parks Board.

Called the Landscape Excellence Assessment Framework (LEAF), the scheme is the first and only one in Singapore dedicated to the provision and management of greenery.

The nine recipients are: Corals at Keppel Bay (condominium); Senja Parc View (HDB estate); Khoo Teck Puat Hospital; The Interlace (condominium); The Rainforest (executive condominium); 158 Cecil Street (office building); Newton Suites (condominium); Pangshan Grove (HDB estate); and Siloso Beach Resort.

The developments were assessed under two key areas - greenery provision and landscape management.

A building in Siloso Beach Resort, for example, houses some one million worms.

They play an important role - breaking down food waste into fertilisers, which are then used in the vegetable and herb gardens.

The resort tries to incorporate natural features into its design, such as building guest rooms around existing trees.

Poon Hong Yuen, CEO of National Parks Board, said: “It is not just a matter of having parks, public green spaces. The whole of Singapore needs to be greened up and be friendly to nature. And of course the built environment is a very important component of our city. So for our city to be in a garden, the built environment also has to be green and friendly to nature.

“Our number 1 consideration was how to align with what the developers want, in terms of their motivation and even their commercial motivation, because we feel that the commercial motivation aligned with the greenery perspective is the best way, the most sustainable way to do this.

“We feel that having the LEAF scheme would help developers to market their projects as green, as friendly to the environment, and also closer to what the market, what people want, as homes or offices or office buildings.”

The nine recipients received their certificates from Minister for National Development, Khaw Boon Wan, at a launch ceremony on Monday morning.
