Green Drinks: Let’s Recycle Together

This month’s focus is RECYCLING! We have two interesting speakers with us - Eugene Tay of Zero Waste SG, and Pearlie Tan of Marcom Recycling Point. Hear Eugene talk about waste and recycling for households, and participate in a Q&A session with Pearlie - a recyclables collector who focuses on commercial recycling.

He will also share about the new Let’s Recycle Together campaign, which aims to encourage more HDB residents to recycle using the existing blue recycling bins in their estates, and to educate them on recycling correctly by learning what can or cannot be placed into the recycling bins.

Our Speakers
Eugene Tay is the Executive Director of Zero Waste SG (http://www.zerowastesg.com/), a non-profit organisation helping Singapore to accelerate the shift towards zero waste and the circular economy.

We aim to promote education and engagement on the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) among individuals and households; increase waste minimisation and recycling among businesses; and reduce specific waste such as plastic disposables and food waste.

One of our key campaigns this year is Let’s Recycle Together (http://www.zerowastesg.com/recycle), which aims to encourage more HDB residents to recycle using the existing blue recycling bins in their estates, and to educate them on recycling correctly.

Pearlie Tan‘s family is in the recycling business and she helped her mother in her recycling collection for a couple of months about 9 years ago. During this experience, she was shocked to see how much wastage there was. Companies do not recycle properly and throw away good stationery like arch files, presentation files, binder clips and many others. On top of that, another shocking truth she discovered was that many recycle collectors throw away good stationery as it takes too much effort to get them to be reused.

Soon after, she decided to wind up her computer service company and started Marcom Recycling Point in August 2008 to make a difference in the recycling collection industry. The stationery salvaged is given away free of charge to encourage organisations to use them.

Along the way, knowing that people basically threw away any and everything, she could not be a regular collector. As long as an item is good, it will not be wasted. As long as there is a recycle centre that accepts it, it will be recycled.
