Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Dr Vivian Balakrishnan will open the Summit to be held in Singapore from 15-18 January 2014. The Summit brings together 500 students from 14 countries to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce waste on a local and global scale.

Hemispheres Foundation’s Action for Earth is organising its inaugural Global Youth Summit bringing environmental youth activists aged 12 to 21 years together in Singapore to plan, collaborate and implement innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce waste.

This unique platform will see young environmentalists from diverse ethnic backgrounds gather to hear from Environmental Resource Management thought leaders like Vivid Argarini from YESS Indonesia,Dr Mitsuko Watanabe, founder of Kamakura Citizens Forum, and Hugh Mason from JFDI.Asia, Asia’s #1 business accelerator, who will beaddressing some poignant issues on waste management.

“Our youth will have to live with the consequences of global warming caused by generations before them. Now, youths are taking matters into their own hands to address the dramatic effects of climate change to build a more sustainable environment for the future. With Actions for Earth Global Youth Summit, youths aim to find solutions towards a future of the earth that they dream of,” said Ann Phua, President and Founder of Hemispheres Foundation.

Together with official travel partner Transinex and support from National Youth Council, City Developments Limited, Dell, National Environment Agency, Public Utilities Board, North West Community Development Council and Singapore Tourism Board among others, the event is set to attract more than 500 participants from 14 countries. This was made possible with support from the Singapore ASEAN Youth Fund administered by the National Youth Council, which aims to promote ASEAN youth interaction.

To position Singapore as the destination to foster youth leadership and volunteerism in the environmental sector, 50 youth leaders from several tertiary institutions in Singapore will be facilitating the Summit. Themed “Take Action for Earth, Waste Not”, the Summit aims to empower young people under the guidance of  environmentalists, educators, entrepreneurs and researchers to collaborate locally and globally to plan and implement innovative initiatives to overcome the natural environment challenges.

During the Summit, delegates are to prepare and present an action plan to develop innovative ideas to minimize waste that can be implemented in their respective home countries. The winning projects with environmentally positive outcome that directly contributes to alleviating global warming will continue to receive support from investors and business incubators who would mentor and help develop a financially sustainable model for their projects. Cash awards sponsored by City Developments Ltd will help kickstart their project.

In addition to discussing global environmental concerns, delegates will also engage in community outreach activities and visit Singapore’s environmental projects such as the Marina Barrage and Semakau Landfill to learn how Singapore has made progress in managing its environmental challenges.
