Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor is lagging far behind its foreign rivals in the global electric vehicle market.
Automotive industry portal MarkLines says over 60,000 electric vehicles were sold worldwide from January to June, a 40 per cent increase from the same period last year. Hyundai accounted for only a tiny 0.2 per cent of this market.
Its subsidiary Kia Motors sold just 139 units of the Ray, Korea’s first electric vehicle, in the first half of this year.
The biggest seller in the global EV market in the six month period was the Nissan Leaf, with sales of over 24,000 units, or 40 per cent of global EV sales. This was followed by Tesla Motors’ Model S, BMW’s i3 and Renault’s Zoe.
