A Singapore scientist has been putting numbers to the heat island effect, in which built up urban locations retain higher temperatures than surrounding undeveloped areas.
National University of Singapore scientist Matthias Roth noted that inner city nighttime temperatures are 7 degrees Celcius warmer than Singapore’s rural areas, double the temperature difference from 40 years ago. The effects are spreading to outlying areas of Singapore that are being built up, and may impact rainfall.
