Eco-Business has won two journalism awards, including recognition for its coverage of the extreme floods that devastated Malaysia last December.
The Singapore-based media company was awarded gold under the category of Best News Website or Mobile Service at the Asian Digital Media Awards 2022, organised by World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).
The Best News Website or Mobile Service category recognises excellence in design, content and user experience, technical implementation and speed, and value to readers. Eco-Business bagged the top prize for websites run by media companies with an annual revenue of less than US$10 million.
The recognition follows a revamp early this year, which saw the sustainability media publication adding new capabilities to its website. Other than a refreshed look. to cater to its growing regional audience, the website offered new language capabilities, including in Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia and Melayu.
The publication was also awarded silver in the Best Data Visualisation category for Tracking the Malaysia floods – a visual story, which was produced by Liang Lei, Firdaus Firlany, Ruba Nackeeran and Ng Wai Mun. The piece told the story of Malaysia’s once-in-a-century innundation using creative publishing format Shorthand, interactive graphics, maps and video. The team tracked and matched open-source weather projections and hourly records for an accurate visualisation of the pathway that the storm took.

Other notable winners at the 2022 Asian Digital Media Awards included a visual story by Nikkei Asia that exposed how Russia created a pre-text for invading Ukraine and a piece by Kontinentalist that highlighted sexual abuse in Singapore.
Last year, Eco-Business was recognised at the Asian Digital Media Awards for its coverage of the climate impact of data centres and threats to Singapore’s dwindling forests. In 2020, Eco-Business won awards for Best Branded Content Campaign for its multimedia exhibition Changing Course 2019, and also in Best Use of Online Video for its VR experience titled ‘On This Earth’.
