Contract for 660,000 TPA waste to energy project in China

Hong Kong based alternative energy company, China Everbright International has signed a BOT (Build Operate Transfer) agreement with Nanjing Municipal Urban Management Bureau for a 660,000 tonne per annum waste to energy incineration plant in Nanjing.

As the provincial capital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing is an important regional centre. Nanjing is the political, economic and cultural centre of Jiangsu Province, the ancient capital of six dynasties and gateway to the Yangtze River Delta area.

According to the company, the project will be run under centralised management with the existing projects operating in Suzhou, Yixing, Jiangyin, Changzhou, Zhenjiang and Suqian, to reap synergies and economies of scale.

The company said that it secured the tender for the project in December 2011.

The facility is expected to require an investment of approximately RMB 1 billion ($168 million) on a BOT basis and the company said that it has obtained a concession period of 30 years.

With a designed waste processing capacity of 2000 tonnes per day and 660,000 tonnes per year, the facility is expected to commence construction during 2012 and to be operational by 2014.

The plant will be equipped with four furnaces, each with a daily processing capacity of 500 tonnes, complemented by two 20 MW generators.

In 2011, Nanjing took the initiative to collect and classify waste while starting the construction of the municipal waste to energy project in the Jiangnan Veinous Park.

According to the company the new facility, together with other solid waste treatment projects, is the starting point on which the Nanjing Veinous Industrial Park will gradually take shape.

Everbright said that it is collaborating closely with the Nanjing Municipal Government to design and build a model environmental protection project to foster the “well-being” of the local residents.
