China plans energy-saving subsidies to boost economy

China is trying to kill two birds with one stone by introducing US$2.2 billion in consumer subsidies for energy efficient products such as computers and air-conditioners. Officials said the year-long subsidy programme would help reduce China’s greenhouse gas emissions, while at the same time boost the economy.

The Republic’s 130 million desktop computers use more than 30 billion kilowatt hours of electricity every year, and its air-conditioners use more than ten times that number.
