BCSD Malaysia Berhad, or The Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia, has appointed Hei Zel Tan as its new programme director and advisor.
Tan is taking over managing the day-to-day affairs of the company from former founding director Roberto Benetello who now leads the Malaysian Recycling Alliance Berhad (MAREA) as its chief executive officer. Benetello will remain as a board director at BCSD Malaysia.
Tan, who has her own legal practice, holds dual qualifications in the United Kingdom and Malaysia. In a press statement released on 10 March, BCSD Malaysia said that Tan brings with her experience in environmental, social and governance (ESG) policy development in areas including marine conservation, fisheries management, gender responsive budgeting, anti-trafficking, and human rights. Tan’s appointment is effective 1 March.
“We are proud to welcome Hei Zel to the association, and confident that with her expertise and impressive track record, the organisation is well-positioned to support sustainable businesses and accelerate the system transformations necessary for a net-zero, nature-positive, and equitable future through its affiliation with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development,” said Prof. Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid, chairman of BCSD Malaysia.
Speaking to Eco-Business, Tan said she strongly believe that businesses have the power to move the needle on sustainability through their operations and influence.
She added: “As a legal professional in the corporate space, I intend to leverage my work to support businesses in bringing about such transformational progress and change. I look forward to engaging with business leaders and other stakeholders to identify challenges and opportunities in this time of transition towards a more sustainable, diverse and inclusive future for all.”
