New BSR website helps Chinese companies save energy

BSR’s new “Energy Management in China” website—the first resource of its kind—will help managers of China-based companies reduce energy use, an important development in a country that is responsible for 23 percent of global emissions.

The site covers recent government policies, best practices, and case studies, and provides technical resources for managing energy efficiency in China.

Given the growing energy risks facing China, energy management is a crucial component for manufacturing operations in the country. Industrial energy use in China is set to rise through 2030, but with an unstable energy network and a nascent Chinese energy-efficiency services market, integrating energy-efficiency management into company operations has been, at best, patchy.

“To date, information on key policies and technical resources is scattered, and companies are often unaware of relevant policies at the local, provincial and national level,” said Laura Ediger, BSR’s Environmental Manager. “This new website provides a variety of highly technical information, as well as case studies from our work with factories to improve energy efficiency.”

The website, which offers information in English and Chinese, is designed as a resource for companies with China-based suppliers, to give them guidance on how to engage with suppliers on energy efficiency, as well as technical tools that will enable suppliers to identify key opportunities for energy savings.

In 2010, BSR launched its Energy Efficiency Partnership, which has helped 10 member companies and 100 Chinese suppliers save 12 million kilowatt hours in energy through a range of a range of carbon-reducing, energy-efficiency projects—including in lighting, electrical motors and drives, and heating and cooling. The program also prepares suppliers for future participation in carbon-emissions trading by building a foundation of data management. This new website provides additional resources to help both suppliers and their customers better understand and address energy-management challenges in China.
