The final month of Ground-Up Initiative’s (GUI) Heritage Kampung festival has seen a fair bit of VIP interest. It kicked off with BG (NS) Tan Chuan Jin – Minister of State, Ministry of National Development & Ministry of Manpower – endorsing the event by agreeing to be its Guest-of-Honour on 9 June at 10am to start the weekend fun.

This decision came after the Minister paid a casual visit to GUI’s Sustainable Living Kampung last week. The hour-long visit lasted two hours as GUI’s work and the Kampung apparently struck a chord with him. It impressed him enough to adjust his busy schedule to squeeze in a guest appearance on Saturday in spite of an impending trip.

This weekend, 9-10 June, was the last full weekend of carnival fun leading up to the last day of Heritage Kampung fun and its finale dinner next Saturday, 16 June with The Grandest Peranakan Wedding.

Heritage Kampung is a carnival open to people of all ages at Bottle Tree Park, Yishun. The heritage event started in February 2012, featuring one weekend every month devoted to kampung fun and discovery of the 21st Century Kampung Spirit. GUI, a four-year-old volunteer-driven, non-profit believes that a 21st Century Kampung Spirit is key to a sustainable future and happier, more balanced communities. The weekend Heritage Kampung series has been a hit with families. There is no entry charge for visitors.

For details about activities and workshop programmes at Heritage Kampung, or to make reservations or book a table for The Grandest Peranakan Wedding (16 June), see heritagekampung.com and facebook.com/heritagekampung

Heritage Kampung is an independent event by the Ground-Up Initiatiative (GUI), a volunteer-driven non-profit that believes in the power of Kampung Culture in shaping communities for a sustainable tomorrow. It has the support of Bottle Tree Pte Ltd, the National Heritage Board and radio FM100.3.

Between carnival dates, GUI continues to run commissioned workshops for schools, corporations and public on leadership, engineering, farming, cooking and DIY activities, along with tours that showcase the creative sustainable practices of their kampung space at Bottle Tree Park. Heritage Kampung’s June finale week will feature The Grandest Peranakan Wedding — dinner theatre with a heritage twist. This, and the entire Heritage Kampung, is truly a people’s event.
