GA Studio Architects bring eco-design to UK college

GA Studio Architects have been commissioned to design two new annexes for a leading North West sixth form.

Ashton Sixth Form College hasn’t yet been given university status, however with the addition of a range of Bachelor’s degrees, foundation degrees and postgraduate diploma courses, the college required a design which would rival that of modern UK universities.

A reception design has already been fully completed by GA Studio (summer 2014) and is operational for this year’s intake of students. With an irregular, ‘fin-effect’ design, the new reception area is designed to maximise natural daylight via slanting glass partitions which throw light deeper into the plan.

Lomax Interiors, a bespoke furniture design company, were commissioned to create a reception desk which would be suitable for students with a range of disabilities. With an angular design of varying heights and the inclusion of induction loop systems, the desk is illuminated with LED bulbs in order to minimise energy usage throughout the building.

A further ‘student hub’ project is currently in the planning stages and will incorporate a living wall in order to reduce the temperature of the building.
