Enderun Colleges: Breeding the next generation of sustainability leaders in the Philippines

Enderun Colleges, a premier academic institution in Taguig City, Philippines, continues to expand its undergraduate program in Sustainability Management. Launched in 2016, the four-year program known as Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Major in Sustainability Management (BSBA-SM) has already produced its first batch of graduates who seek to become sustainability leaders in their chosen careers. Sustainability has become more important than ever, with the climate crisis and the coronavirus pandemic affecting billions of people and making everyone realize that we have to take better care of our planet.

Prof. Edmond P. Maceda, the department head for the program and the school’s Sustainability Director, said: “We are grateful and inspired by the steady growth of our BSBA-SM program, which now has its first graduates – young adults who are armed with the knowledge, skills, values and attitude to make a difference in the world. We are now on our fifth year, with a growing student base, robust faculty roster, and an expanding network of industry partners for internship and career opportunities.”

The pioneering BSBA-SM program at Enderun Colleges is the only undergraduate program in the country that specializes in environmental sustainability. It combines the full suite of core business and sustainability management courses with lessons on public policy, best available science, and triple-bottom-line thinking to address complex problems and challenges.

“The global demand for sustainability professionals and green champions will continue to grow because the world’s environmental problems such as the climate crisis, species extinction, resource depletion, pollution and waste, now compounded by the public health crisis, will increasingly require more action from all sectors. Our students find fulfillment and inspiration in knowing that their future-driven careers will have long-lasting, positive impacts on society and the planet,” Maceda explained.

“Green jobs are on the rise worldwide. Most corporations now have a sustainability management function, strategically aligned with CSR, facilities management, product design, finance, human resources, communications, and ESG reporting functions. We prepare our students for corporate sustainability roles but our program also provides a broader learning framework for those who wish to become future policy-makers, cause-oriented advocates, social entrepreneurs or ecopreneurs. Valuable real-world experience is gained by the students by requiring them to complete two sustainability-oriented internships before they graduate, ” Maceda added.

Our students find fulfillment and inspiration in knowing that their future-driven careers will have long-lasting, positive impacts on society and the planet.

Alexcia Anusevicius, a junior BSBA-SM student, expressed her thoughts: “This course gives me the opportunity to target our environmental issues at its core, where business is very much interconnected with how we function as a society just as we are interconnected with nature. Someday, I aspire to create my own sustainable businesses and continue to challenge the current systems we have in place in hopes of inspiring others to do the same.” Alexcia is on a full scholarship at Enderun by virtue of being valedictorian of her high school three years ago. Approximately 30 per cent of all Enderun students have scholarships or financial aid packages.

Isabella Fernandez, a senior BSBA student with double major in Operations Management and Sustainability Management, added: “The sustainability program has helped me to appreciate our planet more and the people in it as well. Adding this major to my degree has taught me the importance of business and its crucial role in ensuring our planet’s future. Sustainability in itself is very intriguing and I’m glad I get to learn more about my field with such like-minded people.”

The BSBA-SM program is affiliated with Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management. In addition to the Enderun degree, students receive a Thunderbird Certificate once they complete a prescribed set of Thunderbird management courses online.

Prof. Maceda shared his insights on Enderun’s sustainability journey to date: “Integration of sustainability across curricula continues at an amazing pace. All students, regardless of degree, are exposed to various sustainability lessons, from their general education classes to their major subjects. For students who wish to specialize in sustainability, aside from BSBA-SM, our other departments are now rolling out sustainability tracks in their respective degree programs. With more students specializing in sustainability, the future looks bright.”Enderun 5
