Chamber of Commerce showcases Engage Dubai as example of sustainability and change in CSR

Dubai nursery school measures to build environmental awareness in young children and turn them into tomorrow’s responsible adults will be highlighted at the 11th CSR Summit later this month.

Blossom Childrens Nurseries, which caters to children from six months to six years, plants “green seeds” in the minds of youngsters as part of a strategy to use CSR initiatives to empower the next generation.

Zahra Hamirani, Chief Education Officer at Blossom Nursery, will discuss the strategy during a panel session on CSR engagement plans at the CSR Summit, taking place from 18-21 May at The Address Hotel, Dubai Marina, Dubai.

Hamirani said: “We have created new centres in the form of eco spaces. We have installed lined windows, ceiling fans, non-plastic using water filtration systems and recycled water play areas.

“We have added extra safety features in our centres, outdoors and indoors, introduced interconnected iPad charging docks, timed water faucets, hand air-drying devices, hand-made plastic water bottle ceiling light fixtures, record-breaking enviro-fence, and plastic water bottle fences.

“These efforts have been very successful in planting green seeds in our children’s minds, making them responsible adults of tomorrow while also engaging the community into our green efforts.”

Added Hamirani: “CSR and Sustainability lie at the heart of Blossom Education. CSR is not an option or choice, but a thriving chain heavily embedded in our DNA.

“CSR runs deep and spreads through our eco-vision, green goals, healthy meal plans, staff inductions and, most importantly, our curriculum as an early year’s education provider. “

The four-day CSR Summit in Dubai is supported by Platinum sponsors; Nestlé, Unilever and Zain, Gold sponsors; PepsiCo (Asia, Middle East and Africa), Silver sponsors; Intel, Canon, and PiSlice and Healthcare sponsor; Sanofi. Friends of Cancer Patients is the official event charity.

Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry will use the event to highlight the Engage Dubai initiative, an employee volunteering programme, as an example of how it is leading sustainability and change in CSR.

Run by the Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business, Engage Dubai encourages the corporate sector to mobilise employees and use their time, skills and expertise to make an invaluable difference to the communities where they work.

Annelies Hodge, Senior CSR and Internal Communications Manager, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry said: “CSR is vital to business success now and in the future. It helps businesses in reducing costs and enhancing efficiency, attracting and retaining top staff and customers, while enhancing their reputation and relationships with key stakeholders.

“As with all good project management, CSR initiatives should start with a clear objective, benefits and planning by engaging key stakeholders and ensuring expectations are clear. They should be well managed, adjusted where necessary, and finally evaluated and improved.”

Ahead of the CSR Summit, the Chamber is staging its Engage Dubai Give & Gain Day on 15 to promote employee volunteering. Companies can choose from a variety of activities from delivering a CV workshop to budding entrepreneurs, supporting a labour camp or painting with special needs students.

Among the line-up of more than 30 international and regional experts addressing the CSR Summit will be Arijit Ghose, Managing Director, Unilever Gulf, the FMCG leader, and Dr Sven Rohte, COO, Daman, the UAE’s national health insurance company.
