Time to build green and conserve energy

The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) and Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to undertake joint measures for energy conservation in the city.

Under the agreement signed on Monday, the KESC will provide the builders association with technical expertise and guidelines for developing energy efficient architecture in future projects.

“The idea is to increase the number of ‘green buildings’ that would require less energy on sustainable basis, which is the need of the hour under the current circumstances of increased pressures on energy resources,” it was said in a statement issued by the KESC.

The power utility stated that the MoU was signed to encourage energy conservation by maximising usage of natural light during daytime and avoiding undue wastage of electricity.

Earlier, the KESC’s Energy Conservation Team had held interactive session with the ABAD office bearers and members and gave them multiple briefings on the energy conservation cause and how it could be addressed through the forum of builders and developers to yield results.

According to the statement, the KESC has been making sustained efforts by engaging public participation and now also partnering with architects, builders and developers for furthering the cause.

“The point, at which the demand-management and supply-management responsibilities of KESC converge, call for the need of energy conservation and efficiency by KESC, its consumers and other stakeholders to ensure a sustainable and green future,” it was stated.

Given the energy crisis in Pakistan, the KESC attaches immense importance to energy conservation as it aids in the reduction of energy consumption and energy demand per capita, offsetting the growth in energy supply needed to keep up with rising population growth.

It was claimed that the KESC, being conscious of its responsibility towards its consumers and the environment, knows that reducing emissions is an important step towards lessening the impact on the climate change.

“Being cognisant of its corporate social responsibility, the KESC aims at increasing awareness on the energy conservation front – every unit of electricity conserved actually reduces the environmental impact,” it was stated in the press release.
