Uncertain future for Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions target

Japanese cabinet officials later this month are set to reconsider their targets to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 25 per cent. With no firm stance on the issue, Japan is sure to miss the 25 per cent target as it continues to reel from the power supply losses brought about by outages in its nuclear power plants.  Japan had already said earlier that it would not sign up to a second round of commitment under the Kyoto Protocol. It is opting instead to develop another international framework to include all countries by 2020 onwards.
