The recent COP28 in Qatar saw more than 118 countries commit to tripling installed renewable capacity to at least 11,000 GW by 2030. As we accelerate towards a sustainable energy future, there will be increased pressure on land and water resources. Renewable sources, such as ground-mounted solar, demand more land, and the production of green hydrogen through electrolysis may put a strain on already scarce water sources.
Floating solar PV presents a multifaceted solution to the challenges posed by the evolving energy landscape. Installing solar PV on water surfaces avoids competition for land and contributes to water conservation by reducing annual evaporation by more than 6 per cent. When integrated with hydropower plants operating at less than full capacity, floating solar PV seamlessly integrates into existing electrical infrastructure. It also serves as a virtual battery enabling the accumulation or conservation of water during periods of high solar power generation.
DNV has brought its broad experience and deep expertise in solar, power grids and marine engineering in advising a combined 2 GW of floating PV projects worldwide. DNV also led the collaborative joint industry project (JIP) involving 24 industry participants which produced a set of recommended practices for accelerating the safe, sustainable and sound construction of floating solar projects in 2021.
Join us at our upcoming webinar on Unlocking the potential of floating solar PV in APAC. Hosted by DNV, this webinar promises valuable insights into the developments, current practices and lessons learned in floating solar photovoltaics (FPV).
