Singapore is positioning itself as a regional anchor for maritime decarbonisation, leveraging its status as a global shipping and LNG bunkering hub to accelerate the transition to lower-emissions fuels. As it works towards net zero by 2050, low-emissions LNG offers a pragmatic near-term pathway – if methane and lifecycle emissions across the value chain are credibly addressed.
Momentum is building. Initiatives such as the Coalition for LNG Emission Abatement towards Net-zero (CLEAN), led by major importers Japan and South Korea, signal growing demand for greater methane transparency and accountability. Wider participation from Singapore and Asean economies could help establish consistent regional standards and unlock scale.
At the same time, industry players are advancing methane abatement and certification frameworks to validate emissions performance across the LNG supply chain. High-integrity certification – grounded in transparent measurement, reporting, and verification – will be critical to building market confidence and mobilising capital towards lower-emissions fuels.
Yet significant barriers remain. Fragmented regulations, inconsistent emissions accounting standards, and uneven infrastructure readiness across Asia continue to delay investment in low-carbon fuels, port upgrades, and vessel efficiency. Addressing these gaps will be essential to accelerate progress.
Singapore’s pilot initiatives, including the Rotterdam–Singapore Green Corridor and ammonia partnerships, demonstrate how targeted collaboration can catalyse innovation and de-risk emerging solutions.
This report captures key insights from a high-level roundtable convened by Eco-Business in partnership with global non-profit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) on the sidelines of Singapore Maritime Week 2026. Bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, financiers, and technical experts, the discussion explored the evolving policy, market, and financing landscape for low-emissions LNG, methane management, and maritime decarbonisation in Asia.
