Thailand, Philippines ministries of energy reiterate support to solar

Representatives from the ministries of energy for Thailand and The Philippines are the latest to confirm support for the third Solar and Off Grid Renewables Southeast Asia, a two day conference taking place November 25-26 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Alongkorn Ponlaboot, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Alternative Energy, NRC Committee, Pedro Maniego, Chairman of the National Renewable Energy Board and Kulwaree Buranasajjawaraporn, Director of Bureau of Solar Energy development at the Ministry of Energy will join the programme to outline their plans for growing renewable markets across South East Asia.

Also announced recently; PV developers received the long awaited announcement from the Energy Regulatory Commission in Thailand that bids for the 800MW of PPAs, available for projects in conjunction with the public sector and agricultural cooperatives, were open. The 800MW has been released in two phases with 389MW allocated for projects in the Provincial Electricity Authority’s area.

With regards to renewable energy policy in the region Nikesh Sinha, co-founder of NV Vogt commented: “I’m afraid that these countries [the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia] still have policies that are a work in progress. Of these, Thailand has experimented the most and perhaps learnt the most from its experiences”. This is a further signal that Thailand is still leading the way in terms of PV deployment in Southeast Asia.

The announcement of ministry support for the third annual Solar and Off Grid Renewables Southeast Asia conference has raised speaker number across the two days to 51 with notable additions including Pedro Maniego, Chairman of the National Renewable Energy Board, Alongkorn Ponlaboot, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Alternative Energy, NRC Committee and Kulwaree Buranasajjawaraporn, Director of Bureau of Solar Energy, Nikesh Sinha Co-Founder of NV Vogt, Payomsarit Sripattananon, Deputy Director of Alternative Energy Encouragement and Efficiency Department at the Provincial Electricity Authority, Suradech Kietthanakorn, First Senior Vice President of Kasikorn Bank, Ed Francisco, President of Banco De Oro Capital & Investment, Franck Constant, President of Sonnedix Group, Leandro Leviste, CEO of Solar Philippines and Nopadej Karnasuta, Executive Vice President, B.Grimm Power.
