ComfortDelGro Bus to operate Singapore's largest electrified private bus fleet

• ComfortDelGro’s wholly-owned private bus company, ComfortDelGRo Bus, wins S$30 million contract to operate the shuttle service at the National University of Singapore.

• ComfortDelGro’s continued commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the
third consecutive year of inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Asia Pacific (DJSI Asia Pacific).

18 November 2021 – ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited, through its wholly-owned private bus company, ComfortDelGro Bus Pte Ltd, is set to operate Singapore’s largest electrified private bus fleet after winning the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) tender to provide shuttle bus services at its campus.

The multi-year contract, which is valued at more than S$30 million, is for the electrification of the University’s entire fleet of shuttle service buses.

Mr Stephen Chow, CEO of ComfortDelGro Bus, said: “We are excited to have won this tender to operate the largest electrified private bus fleet at the National University of Singapore’s Kent Ridge campus as this is very much in line with both ComfortDelGro Bus’ and NUS’ sustainability goals. We are not new to providing the NUS shuttle service as we have been doing so for nearly two decades. But, to prepare us for the transition towards electrification, we had in July this year trialled an electric bus as part of the NUS shuttle service and that has given us insights as to how we can better manage when the entire fleet will be electrified next year.”

The NUS electric buses, which will begin operations from third quarter of 2022, will continue to serve the eight existing shuttle bus routes within the campus covering NUS Kent Ridge Campus, University Town as well as NUS Bukit Timah Campus daily from 7am to 11pm, including public holidays. They will be wheelchair accessible and equipped with smart features such as a telematics system, an anti-fatigue system as well as a forward collision and side collision warning system.

Mr Jackson Chia, Group Chief Sustainability Officer and CEO of the Private Mobility Group (PMG) said: “The award of this tender is significant on several fronts. With it, we now operate Singapore’s largest private electric bus fleet – and we have every intention to keep growing it. In addition, it pays testament to the confidence our customers have in us as we continue to strengthen our suite of sustainable offerings in private mobility.”

The successful NUS bid comes about two months after its sister company, ComfortDelGro Engineering, had won a strongly-contested tender to operate 479 of 632 electric vehicle chargers slated for introduction next year. The chargers, comprising 192 x 22kW AC chargers, 279 x 7kW AC chargers and 8 x 50kW DC chargers, will be installed in the Central, East and West regions of Singapore.

The Group’s commitment to sustainability has not gone unrecognised. Earlier this week, it became one of four Singapore companies, and the only local transport company, to be included once again in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Asia Pacific (DJSI Asia Pacific) as one of the world’s leading companies for sustainability. It first made it to the prestigious index in 2019. ComfortDelGro has improved its performance this year to be at the 87th percentile among industry peers for all companies assessed this year, an improvement from its 80th percentile position in 2020.
