COP30: Brazil seeks biofuel boom, but critics query climate impact
At COP30 in Belém, Brazil's plan to quadruple global use of green fuels could have mixed climate impact.
The country’s opposition moves to legislate a faster coal exit than the 2040 timeline cited at COP30, introducing a bill that would mandate a 2030–35 shutdown while ensuring a just transition for workers.
More than 100 countries have cut their dependence on fossil-fuel imports and saved hundreds of billions of dollars by continuing to invest in renewables, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
India accounts for more than half of the expected growth, followed by Pakistan, Japan and Australia, finds new data from the International Energy Agency.
