Sabah needs a comprehensive energy plan to power the state into becoming a major green energy user and provider, an environmental protection group here said.
The Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa) suggested that the Federal Government form a special task force towards this direction.
The task force could study all energy options and draw up a master plan to capitalise on the large green energy sources available in the state, Sepa chief Wong Tack said.
The association made the suggestion following a decision by the state and Federal governments to stop a controversial 300MW coal-fired power plant in Lahad Datu in the interest of Sabah’s eco-sensitive environment.
“Sabah can take the lead in developing its green energy now that the five-year hiatus over the coal power issue is over.
“We should move forward with a new chapter and avoid making drastic decisions,” Wong said at a press conference here yesterday.
“We should now look at strategic planning and strategic analysis on the right energy use for the state,” he added.
