5,000 battling forest fires in Shangri-La

About 5,000 firefighters and soldiers are battling two forest fires that broke out on Monday and Tuesday afternoon respectively in Shangri-La County in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

As of 4:30pm on Wednesday, more than 2,000 firefighters were working to control a blaze in Jiefang Village of Jiantang Township which has lasted for two days and spread to 1,000 mu (about 66.67 hectares).

About 2,800 firefighters are battling another fire in Heping Village of Xiaozhongdian Township.

No casualties have been reported, according to the local forest fire prevention headquarters.

The causes of the two fires are under investigation.
