2nd OML Legacy Lectures: “Everything but the Weather: Key Discussions for Climate-Responsive Companies”

The Oscar M. Lopez Center is holding the 2nd OML Legacy Lectures on September 30 (M) from 2:00-5:00 pm at The Fifth at Rockwell, Makati City in the Philippines.

This year’s theme, “Everything but the Weather: Key Discussions for Climate-Responsive Companies”, zeroes in on how businesses can pivot towards embedding climate-related risks and opportunities into strategy and operations. According to the 2019 World Economic Forum Global Risks Report, environmental risks dominate the Global Risks Perception Survey for the third year in a row. Businesses, especially those in climate-vulnerable locations, must be able to assess and prepare for the impacts that climate change will have on every aspect of their operations. Businesses that can effectively identify, assess, respond to, and manage the strategic and operational risks and opportunities presented by the changing business environment will be best positioned for long-term growth.

Speakers Steven R. Wilson and Valerie Kwan, as well as moderator Stefanie Beitien, will help invited guests gain a deeper understanding of what makes a climate-resilient company, share best practices in accelerating climate action, and provide practical knowledge on how resilience can increase the bankability and credit worthiness of businesses.

Steve Wilson has over 25 years of experience in international private sector development with the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. He is now a consultant on private sector climate risks and opportunities, a business advisor to start-ups and growth equity companies in clean energy climate analytics and climate resilience, a Director with Levoca Impact Labs, an impact investment firm and Principal in BGB Investment Partners. Current and recent clients include the Inter-American Development Bank, the Nordic Development Fund, the World Bank Group, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, The Climate Service, Winrock International, and the Lightsmith Group, among others.

Valerie Kwan is the Manager for Climate Action 100+ at Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC), an initiative to ensure the world’s largest corporate greenhouse gas emitters take necessary action on climate change. As manager, she oversees AIGCC’s portfolio of companies in Asia and facilitates investor engagement and related activities. She previously worked as an Environmental, Social, and Governance advisor at Pacific Risk Advisors and as manager in EY, Climate Change and Sustainability Services in Hong Kong.

Stefanie Beitien is the Director of Partnerships for Eco-Business, one of the leading news resources for cleantech, responsible business and sustainable development. Eco-Business helps businesses, governments, NGOs, research institutions, and think tanks to share ideas and best practices, advance public awareness, and stimulate debate on sustainable development.

Ms. Beitien regularly moderates and speaks at events in the sustainability space. As an expert in business development, she establishes profitable partnerships with stakeholders across all sectors. Prior to Eco-Business, she was the Managing Director for Live Card Management and has held various marketing positions in the Pirelli Tyre Group, both in the international headquarters in Milan and in Munich.

The annual lecture is being mounted in honor of the Center’s namesake, Lopez Group of Companies Chairman Emeritus Oscar M. Lopez.
