Diversey partners Nanyang Polytechnic in sustainability curriculum for hospitality & tourism

Diversey and Nanyang Polytechnic signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen environmental and social sustainability education. Both parties will build skills and knowledge in sustainability among students and the Hospitality & Tourism workforce.

The MOU between Diversey and NYP covers the following SIX (6) broad areas:

  1. Strengthening environmental education through curriculum
  2. Enhancing students’ experiences, and fostering a sense of environmental consciousness, both within and beyond curriculum
  3. Collaborating to enhance environmental sustainability efforts and students’ learning experiences
  4. Undertaking R&D / industry projects related to environmental sustainability
  5. Leveraging opportunities in the community to promote environmental sustainability and for students to contribute to the community through applied learning
  6. Co-developing appropriate sustainability courses for the Hospitality & Tourism Industry to equip talent with skills in new growth areas in a post-Covid world

The Covid-19 pandemic has unprecedented repercussions on Singapore’s tourism industry. For a sector that caters to a decidedly international audience, the pandemic has forced companies to quickly adapt and even re-think their business models. Hospitality & tourism businesses must explore more sustainable ways of leveraging local resources and benefitting the local community. Consumers have also become more aware of the environmental impact of their consumption, driving businesses to embrace sustainability for growth, efficiency, reputation, and innovation.

Diversey has a strong CSR policy to conduct a sustainable business in compliance with all applicable health, safety and environmental laws. In the hospitality & tourism domain, Diversey initiated CSR projects such as “Soap For Hope”, “Linens For Life” and “CoffeeBriques” in which used hotel products (soap, linens, coffee grinds) are upcycled and distributed to the poor communities across major cities of the world. More importantly, Diversey has also assisted hotels in being certified by external sustainability certification bodies such as Green Globe, EarthCheck and Green Key.

Through this collaboration, NYP’s School of Business Management hopes to enhance its Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management (DHTM) learners’ skill sets in driving sustainability initiatives. Modules under the DHTM will include topics on sustainability and learners will also get the opportunity to work on sustainability-related industry projects.

Both parties are also working towards co-delivering a Continuing Education and Training course on Hospitality & Tourism Sustainability to educate and train learners on all aspects of Sustainability, including Sustainable Management, Corporate Social Responsibility, Cultural Heritage as well as the Environment. Learners will get to create a Sustainability Management Plan and get access to a step-by-step guide on implementing Sustainability Best Practices for a hotel.

“Diversey is very honoured to collaborate with NYP on developing a Sustainable Hospitality curriculum for the DHTM students. Hospitality and Tourism contributes to about 4 per cent of Singapore’s GDP pre-Covid and is expected to grow post-Covid. It is imperative that together, we help the sector to be sustainable so as to be more resilient, protect livelihoods as well as Singapore’s environment for the future,” said Stefan Phang, Director, Sustainability, Diversey.

“Our partnership with Diversey will support Singapore’s move towards becoming a sustainable tourism destination, which is a key target under the Green Plan 2030. The joint development and delivery of training courses and sustainability development projects for the hospitality industry will ensure that the sector has a pipeline of skilled talent to boost Singapore’s growth in sustainable tourism,” said Esther Ho, Director, School of Business Management, Nanyang Polytechnic.
