HEINEKEN Asia Pacific employees celebrate World Water Day 2015

On Sunday, 8 March 2015, 12 employees of HEINEKEN Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (HEINEKEN Asia Pacific) ran in the Water Challenge Wave of the Green Corridor Run 2015 to promote awareness of water scarcity in developing countries, celebrate World Water Day and raise funds for a good cause.

The Water Challenge is a new non-competitive category within the Green Corridor Run for 2015, held in conjunction with Singapore’s World Water Day celebrations. Over 450 participants carried containers with 1 to even 30 litres of water for a distance of 10.5km, to experience what it is like for 44 per cent of the world’s population that has to walk long distances to fetch clean water for safe drinking and domestic uses.

For every litre that is poured into the ceremonial well at the finish area, the organisers will donate SGD$1 to charity: water, a non-profit organisation that will use the funds to bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries through sustainable water projects. HEINEKEN Asia Pacific will also dedicate SGD$100 per litre poured into the well by the 12 employees participating, to a water project run by one of its Operating Companies (OpCos) in the region.

Additional funds were also raised by the 12 employees, who collected pledges from family, friends and colleagues at the company, to support their efforts in the run and to contribute to their water project fund. HEINEKEN Asia Pacific is proud to announce that all of the 12 runners completed the Water Challenge within 2 hours, with 5 litres of water each poured into the ceremonial well at the end of the run.

One of the 12 HEINEKEN Asia Pacific runners, Kalpesh Tejani, Regional Supply Chain Technical Support Manager shared: “Protecting water resources is a key focus of our company’s long-term sustainability strategy Brewing a Better World, and I am happy to have been able to be part of this activity, to raise awareness about the importance of this resource. Although running or even just walking with a heavy container full of water was tough, I can only imagine how truly difficult it must be for people living in remote areas to travel long distances to fetch water – which might not even be clean. It was a great experience and I feel really lucky to be living in a country where we have easy access to clean water everyday.”

Including all pledges from family, friends, employees and the company, these 12 employees raised a total of over SGD$10,000 to be contributed to a sustainable water project run by one of its Operating Companies (OpCos) in the region.
