Green building awards gain momentum

The inaugural Asia Pacific Regional Network Leadership Awards in Green Building have gained momentum, with an awards partner and two high-profile judges announced.

Leading sustainable manufacturer, Shaw Contract Group, has committed to partner with the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) to sponsor the awards.

“Shaw Contract Group is honored to partner with the WorldGBC to recognize true leadership and achievement in green building,” says Shaw’s Director of Global Marketing, Todd Jarvis.

The biennial awards program will honor outstanding organizations for their commitment to sustainability, and will celebrate innovative green building projects that are reducing carbon emissions and other environmental impacts, cutting costs and driving higher levels of health and productivity for building occupants.

“We are excited to be collaborating with Shaw to host the Asia Pacific Regional Network Leadership Awards in Green Building. The partnership is a natural fit, as Shaw is a leader in post-consumer recycling, having recycled more carpet than its competitors combined,” says Jane Henley, Chief Executive Officer of the WorldGBC.

Appropriately, the announcement of the awards on 2 September 2014 will coincide with the anniversary of Shaw’s grand opening of the first manufacturing facility in the Asia Pacific to produce globally-consistent, cradle-to-cradle certified carpet tile.

Two high-profile architects, Ken Yeang and Karan Grover, have also been announced as judges, joining Hans Shrader from the International Finance Corporation, Constant Van Aerschot from the Business Council for Sustainable Development Singapore, and Stefanos Fotiou from the United Nations Development Programme.

An architect, planner and ecologist, Ken Yeang is best known for his signature eco-architecture and eco-masterplanning that have a distinctive green aesthetic. He is principal of Hamzah & Yeang in Malaysia, a firm with expertise in deep green innovative ecological architecture and masterplanning.

“I am delighted to be a part of the Asia Pacific Regional Network Leadership Awards in Green Building, which will identify our leading champions of green design,” Dr Yeang says.

Karan Grover, principal of Karan Grover and Associates, is a passionate advocate of sustainable contemporary architecture that harmonizes with its surrounding culture and heritage. Mr Grover’s 22–year effort resulted in the Champanar Pavagadh in Gujarat achieving UNESCO’s World Heritage Site status.

“The world movement creating sustainable businesses and buildings is gaining momentum. It is timely and essential that we honor those who are providing leadership in the protection and conservation of all that promotes life and it is a pleasure to be associated with the Asia Pacific Regional Network Leadership Awards in Green Building. I look forward to reviewing the entries and identifying those of excellence to receive their due recognition,” Mr Grover says.

The awards, presented by the WorldGBC Asia Pacific Network in partnership with the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation and the Business Council for Sustainable Development Singapore, honor leaders, innovators and champions in sustainability and green building.

The awards are open to companies large and small, as well as to projects across the region. Nominations must be submitted through recognized green building councils in Asia Pacific countries. Nominations close on Friday 20 June.
