— BASF at High-Speed Rail Summit and Exhibition 2013: Booth No. T20, Shanghai Pudong Expo, September 26-27, 2013

Shanghai, China – BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, will showcase its innovative solutions for high speed railways such as its lightweight solutions for rail vehicle construction and new functional materials solutions for rail vehicle interiors, at High-Speed Rail Summit and Exhibition 2013.

“Chemistry provides answers for high speed railway track construction and train manufacturing. Backed by our extensive international experience in high speed railway projects and strong research & development capabilities, BASF is committed to supporting China’s ambitious plan of building 30,000 km of highspeed railway lines by 2020. With our high performance, innovative and customized solutions that meet stringent product standards, BASF is also well positioned to contribute to the rapid development of a world class high speed railway network in China,” said Dr Zheng Daqing, Senior Vice President, Business Management, BASF Greater China.

New concepts for rail vehicle seating, textile coating, window sealant and structural adhesives

A new highlight at the High-Speed Rail Summit and Exhibition 2013 will be the application of Elastoflex® W, a versatile polyurethane flexible foam, for seating cushions, headrests and armrests in rail vehicles.

The flexible foams made from Elastoflex W systems are light, flexible and maintain their good mechanical properties under all climatic conditions. In particular, with its excellent vibration and noise absorption performance for vehicles, they show high absorption of vehicle vibration and noise, which it can significantly enhance rail vehicle comfort.

Additionally, BASF will unveil a new concept for rail vehicles interior textile coating based on Lurapret®. Textile after treatment with Lurapret textile coatings technology possesses strong anti-fouling and decontaminating properties, as well as improved sunlight resistance and strength.

BASF will also introduce a number of special polyurethane materials including easy-processing, UV resistant elastomer for window sealant and non-solvent, excellent low-temperature resistant structural adhesives based on Elastan®, for adhesion between different materials such as insulation materials and metal.

Polyurethane composite solutions for rail vehicle lightweight construction

Polyurethanes can contribute significantly to lightweight rail vehicle construction. BASF will display the ranges of innovative polyurethane composite solutions for stronger and lighter rail vehicles including the Elastoflex paper honeycomb technology for rail vehicle interior floors and walls, as well as Elastoflex long fiber injection for exterior roofing that stands out for its lightweight, high strength and high stiffness.

The long fiber injection process cuts glass fibers from a reel, and then chops it into superfine fibers which are mixed with the PU reaction system. The combined glass fibers and PU system yields an extra-strong composite material.

High performance solutions for rail vehicle engine system

BASF will display its lightweight Ultramid® PA66 bearing cage for rail vehicle at the exhibition. PA66 bearing cage stands out as an excellent substitution to metal thanks to its superior performance in friction compatibility, strength and resilience, wide range of working temperature, anti-corrosion, abrasion resistance and easy processing.

Another BASF solution for rail vehicle engine system is synthetic lubricant for steering gear box. With its excellent low- and hightemperature performance, good resistance to humidity, it can generate endurable oil film and provide outstanding protection for gears, preventing them from scratching, pitting corrosion and micro pitting corrosion, prolonging oil change period, reducing disposal and recycling cost of wasted oil.

Performance materials for track construction

BASF will showcase its advanced technology base on Elastotrack®, Elasturan®, and Ultramid PA6 for railway track construction, which have been applied to major dedicated passenger lines including Wuhan-Guangzhou, Zhengzhou-Xi’an and Shanghai-Hangzhou lines.

Track ballast binder with excellent adhesion performance made from Elastotrack®, a polyurethane adhesive, can be applied to stations, bridges, corners to enhance warranty of railroad ballast, reduce ground erosion and protect its geometry, provide cushioning effect and improve safety and comfort.

Damping elastomer for fasteners made from Elasturan and gauge apron plates made from Ultramid PA6 can significantly increase insulation and reduce noise and vibration. Additionally it can significantly reduce maintenance cost and expand components lifetime.

Specialty foam and damping materials make a quieter and smoother ride possible

Basotect® sound absorbent foam has been broadly used in passenger dedicated lines since 2002 thanks to its high performance in sound absorption, heat insulation and flame retardancy. Typical applications of Basotect in rail vehicles include acoustic and thermal insulation of walls, roofs and aluminum air ducts.

At the High-Speed Rail Summit and Exhibition 2013, BASF will also showcase its damping materials - Acronal water-borne acrylic emulsion with superior performance of noise reduction under high and low temperatures. Acronal water-borne acrylic emulsion contains no chemical solvent, bringing extra value of low volatile organic compounds.

Complete coating system, additive and pigment series for rail vehicle interiors and exteriors

In China’s railway industry, BASF coating solutions have contributed to the Shanghai No. 2 and No. 10 subway lines and the Hangzhou No. 1 subway line.

BASF provides a complete coating system for rail vehicle interiors and exteriors from epoxy primer, polyurethane coatings, polyurethane primer, anti-graffiti varnish to anti-graffiti top coat. With more than 30 years of international market presence, fire-proof and smoke-proof accreditations by international prestigious organizations, BASF’s coating solutions are highly acknowledged for outstanding performance in anti-corrosion and resistance to the atmospheric agents.

Additionally, BASF will display its complete additive and pigment series, which have been broadly applied to coatings and plastics to improve products’ service life, ultraviolet resistance, and weather resistance.
