Urban public transport to see more integration

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin recently said the urban public transport (UPT) system would see further integration in 2011 to ensure that it is significantly enhanced and efficiently coordinated to benefit all urban dwellers.

He said this following the transformation of the public transport system that began last year under the UPT National Key Results Area (NKRA) of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP), where bus, train, and rail services underwent major revamps to provide more efficient services for the people in Klang Valley.

He said the public transport saw a 17% increase in ridership, surpassing the initial 15% target last year.

Through the various initiatives of the UPT NKRA, Muhyiddin said the government aims to increase the usage of public transport by up to 25% by the end of 2012.

Accompanied by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha during a walkabout in the city to gauge the efficiency of the public transport system on Feb 12, Muhyiddin said that an efficient and integrated transport system is imperative for commuters to enjoy an uninterrupted and timely journey to their destinations.
