Unit 3 at Qinshan Phase II Nuclear Power Station begins operation

Unit 3 at the Qinshan Phase II Nuclear Power Station, the first power station built during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), was put into commercial operation on Oct. 21.

China’s independent design, construction, management and operation of Unit 3 has laid a solid foundation for further grasping the third-generation nuclear power technology, thus reducing the nuclear power industry’s dependence on foreign technologies and promoting the industry’s development, said Sun Qin, Party chief and general manager of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNP).

The Qinshan Phase II Nuclear Power Station, which previously had two units numbered 1 and 2, is the first independently-designed, built, managed and operated large commercial nuclear power station in China. The expansion project of the power station includes the construction of Unit 3 and Unit 4, both of which have an installed capacity of 650,000 kilowatts.

Yang Lanhe, general manager of the Nuclear Power Qinshan Joint Venture Company, a partially owned subsidiary of CNNP, said that the self-designed expansion project has carried out 10 subprojects and made more than 1,400 technological improvements since the beginning of its construction.

The actual generating capacity of the two new units will account for 75 percent of their designed capacity, while the percentage for Unit 1 and Unit 2 is only 65 percent. In addition, 77 percent of the two new units are domestically made, a big increase from the 55 percent of Unit 1 and Unit 2.

Overall, the reliability and economical efficiency of the Qinshan Phase II Nuclear Power Station has been greatly enhanced and participating nuclear power companies have also achieved remarkable progress in technology research and development as well as the production of nuclear power equipment.
