Pattern Energy, Samsung acquire wind farm project in Canada

Pattern Energy and Samsung Renewable Energy have jointly acquired land from Suncor Energy’s Fargo wind project and a wind development project developed by Northland Power in Canada.

The two development projects will be included in the larger South Kent wind farm, a 270MW wind project located in the Regional Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Ontario, which Pattern and Samsung are developing this year.

Pattern Energy CEO Mike Garland said that the the company and Samsung will be able to accelerate the development of these projects by combining them with Pattern’s nearby South Kent wind farm and its transmission connection.

Samsung senior executive vice president Cheol-Woo Lee said that together with Pattern, the company is making major progress on its goal to bring new sources of wind energy to Ontario.

“In addition to closing on these projects we are closing on thousands of acres in southwestern Ontario and the Bruce region for the development of more than 500MW of wind power,” Lee said.

Samsung said that the wind farms will use Ontario-made wind turbine components and towers from a new Siemens (SIE) wind-turbine blade factory in Tillsonburg and a new Samsung wind-turbine tower factory in Windsor.
